I want you to meet this beautiful young woman. Her name is Katie Marie Cash. A few months ago my daughter suggested I follow Katie. I wasn’t quite sure what she meant because it wasn’t a blog. A few days ago my daughter gave me her Facebook link to Finally Alive After 25. Through my daughter’s descriptions of Katie’s inspirational journey I was impressed by her successes but couldn’t connect the dots till I read her page to understand the excursion she’s been on for the last three years.
Personally, Katie is a brave woman to post her experiences online for everyone to see. She has 3,779 followers as of 7/2/13. Yep, that’s right. She posts her successes and her failures. She accepts her humanness and gets back up without looking back. She’s always marching forward and taking you with her.
As with many, Katie has always struggled with her weight. Her struggle finally hit a wall when she got on the scale in December of 2010. Horrified at the 317 number it was at that moment she resolved, “This needs to stop.” She had lost an uncle to complications of obesity two years prior and refused to be the next victim.
Katie took charge slowly. She was living at home with her mother and sister and had a gym membership to Planet Fitness. She started doing cardio work on the treadmill and elliptical. At times she used the weight machines. Her diet went from a double cheeseburger to a single cheeseburger. Her approach was to cut back on her fast-food foodie lifestyle. She didn’t do any research on what foods would help her lose the weight
During this period Katie’s sister, Kristin lost 75 pounds. (BTW, Kristin has a FB page too Kristin’s Journey After 30.) This was the incentive Katie needed to pursue a different regiment because if Kristin could do it so could she. With her inspiration to guide her and it was two years later, she joined a different gym. She now weighed 269, a loss of 48 pounds.
With her new membership, obtained at the end of February 2012, she received a free training session where she found out that her body fat percentage was nearly fifty percent. That was the defining moment for real change.
Inspired to do better Katie cut out ALL fast foods. She filled out a food log that her trainer asked her to put together. After a few months her trainer suggested getting rid of carbs after lunch time. Carbs were her trigger to overeat. Eventually during this time frame, she cut out carbs all together.
Now Katie eats 5 small meals a day and has incorporated carbs back into her meals – but only the healthy ones. There’s always a protein and a healthy carb. She indulges fruits for the morning and after workouts.
Katie met with her trainer once a week. The trainer would set her week up with a workout that she would repeat 4-5x a week, one day of cardio, and one day off.
Katie wears a Body Media Fit Armband. The interactive portion of the armband allows you to track your meals. Your activity is monitored all day long by wearing the armband. It will show you the number of calories you’ve burned all day long.
Katie doesn’t just limit herself to the gym. She’s competed in the Color Run. That looks like a lot of crazy fun. She also participated in the 5 K Race to Wrigley.
Every day Katie adds to her Facebook page where she chronicles her achievements and her struggles. She’ll capture her photo after a workout while showing you the calories she’s burned. And when you read her posting you know THAT’s a workout. There are inspirational stories, motivational tidbits, Throwback Thursdays where she’ll show photos of her progression.
Katie has a few recipes that people like and she’s placed them on her FB page in the notes section. One of the recipes, Egg White Cupcakes, I’ve listed below. I love this idea because you can make them on the weekend for your week ahead. No excuses breakfast.
She is truly an inspiration and certainly worth liking on FB to follow her progress. Her story is amazing and gives you something to work toward.
Congrats Katie on all that you’ve done.
