If you like to sew, or quilt – there is a distinct difference – this may be what you’re looking to do for an adorable little gift for Mother’s Day, best friend coffee day, kids away at college, the administrative assistant you really like, or anyone that enjoys that cup of Joe or tea and is in need of a large coaster.
I went to my stash and pulled out these colors. (Groovey, eh?) I ended up using some colors that I was saving for a quilt but what are stashes for? Many of you whom have been at this much longer than I probably have lots of left-overs that you could pull together. But for me simple is the way to go:
- 2 charm squares – or 2 – 5″ squares
- 1 – 9″ x 8 1/4″ for the right side of the rug
- 1 – 12 5/8″ x 8 1/4″ backing
- 1 – 12 5/8″ x 8 1/4″ iron-on batting
- 3 strips of 2 1/2″ x 18″ for the binding
Sew the opposite contrasting piece to the other.
Then cut those in half and sew opposing color squared to each other.
You sew those to each other till you have a 4 x 2 strip for the left side of the rug.
Iron on the batting. Trim the sides.
Pin the backing to the binding and top.
Then quilt it to what ever you want. In this fabric pattern I just stitched in the green rows.
Create the binding as you would any other quilt project. I do mine differently but you can visit here at Crazy Mom Quilts where Amanda Jean gives a tutorial of how best to create a binding and how to sew it on. Please note, she is also instructing you in how to measure for what you need in your binding.
That’s it! Not kidding, for me maybe 2 hours tops. Depends on your quilting.
It’s handmade by you which makes it all the more special.
